A Message from Rev. Joe McMurray, Pastor:
“And the angel of God appeared to him in a flame of fire out of the midst of a bush, and Moses looked, and lo, the bush was burning, yet it was not consumed. And Moses said, “I will turnaside and see this great sight, why the bush is not burnt.” When God saw that he turned aside to see, God called to him out of the bush, “Moses, Moses!” And he said, “Here I am.” Then God said, “Do not come near; put off your shoes from your feet, for the place on which you are standing is holy ground.”
- Exodus 3:2-5
Queer community – and in its broader context, we mean gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender, queer, questioning, intersex, straight allies, friends and believers – has had its desert moments throughout the decades. Just as the Hebrew people walked the desert for 40 years, queer community has wandered along its way for just about that long – at least, with regard to its public “coming out” as part of the social and sexual revolution of the late 60s.
And for 22 proud years, Trinity Metropolitan Community Church of Gainesville, Florida answered God’s call with a clear and distinct “Yes, God, here we are!” TMCC continues to stand proud among those who have had the courage to stand up and be counted when it really mattered.
We continue to provide a place where mutual respect and inclusivity are the rule of each day. And we continue to let our voices be heard when matters of social justice are at issue or inequality finds a safe haven anywhere in our land. We are a people who believe very strongly in uniting behind one purpose – bringing to all people everywhere the social gospel of kindness, love and grace. We are all gifts of God – made in God’s image – and we are proud to celebrate all that we are, and all that God created us to be. This spiritual home has indeed become a house of prayer for all of God’s people.
And so, we welcome you – whoever you are, wherever you have come from, know that you are always welcome. We worship in the Christian tradition, and we embrace you on whatever spiritual journey you travel, through whichever desert you have trod. Though we accept with reluctance that we are imperfect beings, we rise to the challenge of someday reaching that potential we know lies within us.
It is all part of our journey together; and for that we extend an invitation to join us. The only thing that can match the beauty of the great spirit of this community is the loving tenderness with which it is nestled among the live oak trees, as gently as if in God’s own arms.
Trinity Metropolitan Community Church – truly we are standing on holy ground.
God’s blessings, Rev. Joe
